The opening race of the new season at the Australian Grand Prix produced plenty of drama, but one moment after the checkered flag grabbed just as much attention. Max Verstappen delivered a dry, sarcastic reaction when he learned that fans had voted him Driver of the Day. The four-time world champion pumped his fist, laughed, and shouted “Yes!” with clear irony.

The moment summed up his entire weekend. The result on paper looked impressive, yet the reality felt far less satisfying. Verstappen climbed from the very back of the grid to sixth place, which normally sounds heroic.

However, the Dutchman clearly saw it as damage control rather than something worth celebrating.

A Recovery Drive That Looked Better Than It Felt

Max / IG / The 21-year-old F1 world champion crashed in Q1 after a sudden loss of rear grip triggered by a software problem in the car.

That mistake left him without a lap time and forced him to start twentieth on the grid at Albert Park Circuit.

From that moment, the race became a long recovery mission. Verstappen spent the afternoon slicing through traffic with his usual aggression and precision. By the closing laps, he had climbed to sixth place, finishing behind both Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team drivers, the two Scuderia Ferrari cars, and Lando Norris.

The comeback showed why Verstappen remains one of the sport’s most relentless racers. He attacked overtakes on the straights, managed his pace through traffic, and still found enough speed to set the fastest lap of the race. Even so, the performance never felt smooth or comfortable from the cockpit.

Every position gained required extra effort. Midfield traffic forced him into constant battles and unpredictable moves. The result looked strong on the timing sheet, but Verstappen sounded far from impressed with the experience.

The Sarcastic “Driver of the Day” Moment

Fans watching the race appreciated the comeback and rewarded Verstappen with the Driver of the Day vote. The award is decided by viewers during the race broadcast and usually celebrates standout performances or dramatic drives through the field.

During a post-race interview with ESPN F1, Verstappen was told he had won the fan award. His response arrived instantly and carried a heavy dose of sarcasm. He raised his fist, shouted “Yes!”, and laughed at the situation.

The room burst into laughter because the meaning was obvious. Verstappen did not see the award as a victory. The sarcastic celebration showed his frustration with a race weekend that had already slipped out of reach before Sunday even started.

His reaction quickly spread across social media. Fans loved the dry humor, while others saw it as the perfect snapshot of Verstappen’s personality. He rarely hides his feelings, and in this case, the message came across clearly without needing a long explanation.

Frustration With the Car and the Racing

Max / IG / Verstappen compared the midfield battles to a round of Mario Kart, which painted a vivid picture of the constant overtakes and counter overtakes on the long straights.

The star driver pointed to the energy management systems and the racing dynamics of the current generation of cars. According to Verstappen, drivers often pass each other easily on the straights only to lose the position again in the next sector. That pattern creates frantic racing but little sense of control.

The Dutch driver also struggled with tyre graining and brake issues during the race. Those problems forced him to manage the car carefully while still pushing forward through traffic. The balancing act added another layer of frustration to an already messy afternoon.

When asked if he saw positives in the new regulations or the car’s feel, Verstappen answered bluntly. He admitted that the sixth-place finish itself counted as a decent result. But beyond that, he did not see much to celebrate.
