A fresh addition to Iceland's volcanic roster has brought an unexpected twist – tornadoes! This newcomer, christened Litli-Hrútur or "Little Ram," marked its fiery debut last month with a riveting lava eruption that has set off a series of tornadoes.

Sprouting from the Rekyjanes Peninsula, a mere 40 kilometres away from Iceland's bustling capital, Reykjavik, Litli-Hrútur emerged following a seismic symphony of over 7000 earthquakes that had rocked the region. Nature has a way of announcing its grand entrances!
Last week, the skies were witness to an awe-inspiring dance of elements. Drone cameras captured the mesmerizing sight of molten lava gracefully pouring from the volcano's mouth while a tornado swirled overhead. The explanation for this remarkable convergence lies in the fiery heart of the volcano itself – lava reaching scorching temperatures of up to 1200°C.

This intense heat warms the air layer directly above it, setting the stage for the spectacular tornado formation. The concept isn't entirely novel; 2018 a similar phenomenon was observed at Iceland's Kīlauea volcano.
The Science Behind the Whirling Marvel
David Smart, an expert in tornados and storms hailing from University College London's Hazard Centre, lends his insights into the captivating occurrence.
Smart explains, "This is a type of tornado that is sometimes seen where there is a strong heat source on the ground and the atmosphere is unstable in the lowest kilometre [0.6 mile] or so near the surface." So, in essence, the convergence of scorching lava and unstable atmospheric conditions weaves the magic that is a volcanic tornado.

Exploring the Eruption
However fascinating the scene might be, Iceland's Meteorological Office (IMO) has issued a note of caution to the public. Reports of resounding bangs akin to distant thunder have echoed from the site.
These dramatic sounds, it turns out, are the outcome of pockets of methane gas within the lava flow, exploding with a fiery exuberance. In light of this potentially explosive situation, the wise advice from the experts is to steer clear of the site and admire the natural spectacle from a safe distance.
The Peninsula's Volcanic Legacy
Litli-Hrútur is not the first volcanic sensation to grace Iceland's Rekyjanes Peninsula. Just a month prior, the peninsula was rocked by a volcanic eruption triggered by a 5.2-magnitude earthquake.
This seismic event gave rise to a 900-meter-long (about half a mile) fissure, snaking its way open by the Litli Hrútur mountain in Grindavik. The peninsula's volatile history is a testament to Iceland's fiery geologic personality.
