For more than three decades, Ötzi the Iceman has fascinated archaeologists and scientists around the world. His frozen body has revealed secrets about ancient life, early medicine, diet, and even murder. Now, researchers have uncovered something nobody expected. Tiny organisms inside his body still show signs of life after more than 5,300 years.
The discovery comes from a new study published in the journal Microbiome. Researchers found a thriving community of microbes living within the famous mummy. Even more surprising, some cold-loving yeasts appear to remain active today. Instead of being a silent relic from the distant past, Ötzi has become a remarkable biological system that continues to change in slow motion.
The Frozen Mummy Still Supports Life
GTN / Ötzi was discovered in the Alps in 1991 after thousands of years trapped beneath glacier ice. His body remained exceptionally well preserved because freezing temperatures slowed decay.
Since then, the mummy has been carefully stored inside a climate-controlled chamber at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, Italy. The room stays close to minus 6 degrees Celsius to copy the icy conditions where he was found.
Scientists from Eurac Research wanted to know which microscopic organisms lived inside the mummy. They collected tissue samples, surface swabs, and meltwater from the storage chamber. Advanced DNA testing helped separate ancient microbes from modern contamination. This careful approach allowed the team to build the clearest picture yet of the tiny life forms connected to Ötzi.
The results revealed a surprisingly complex microbial community. Some microbes likely lived inside Ötzi while he was alive. Others settled into the body after his death while it rested inside the glacier. A third group arrived much later through scientific handling and preservation work. That distinction helped researchers understand which organisms truly belong to the ancient mummy.
Scientists identified several species of cold-adapted yeasts, including ‘Glaciozyma.’ These microscopic fungi naturally survive in freezing environments. Instead of lying completely inactive, some showed signs of slow metabolism and gentle reproduction while living inside the preserved mummy.
A Living Laboratory Frozen in Time

The cold-adapted yeasts have spent centuries surviving under extreme conditions. They appear capable of carrying out basic life processes despite the freezing temperatures. Their slow activity shows that some forms of life can remain surprisingly resilient when conditions remain stable for thousands of years.
The study also uncovered ancient gut bacteria, unlike those commonly found in people today. Modern lifestyles, processed foods, antibiotics, and changing environments have reshaped the human microbiome over thousands of years. Ötzi offers a rare snapshot of what those microbial communities looked like long before modern civilization.
Researchers noticed expected damage in the ancient bacterial DNA, confirming their great age. The yeasts, however, painted a different picture. Their continued activity raises fascinating questions about survival, adaptation, and the limits of microbial life. Scientists now have a rare chance to study organisms that have quietly persisted since prehistoric times.
Another surprise came from the yeasts themselves. Some developed the ability to break down phenol, a chemical once used to protect the mummy from unwanted fungal growth. That adaptation suggests these organisms responded to changes introduced during modern preservation. Even inside a carefully controlled museum environment, evolution never completely stopped.
